What are veneers?
One of the main methods of improving the appearance of teeth in cosmetic dentistry is the application of porcelain veneers. It is the method that a large group of people known from the so-called show business owe their smiles to. Veneers allow for a quick and spectacular metamorphosiswith minimal interference with the hard tissues of the teeth. What are veneers?
Porcelain veneers are in the form of extremely thin (0.5 to 0.75 mm) flakes made of durable ceramic material. These plates are cemented to the anterior surface of the crowns. Each veneer is designed and made individually so that the appearance does not differ from the natural dentition. The ceramic material (porcelain) used in this method is extremely resistant to mechanical damage, and the colour, translucency and degree of light reflection perfectly imitate natural glaze. The porcelain is also resistant to discoloration and development of decay. This aesthetic method can be used on single teeth as well as on all teeth visible in a smile. Modern dental veneers last very long time, even for 15 to 20 years.
We recommend this solution in order to provide:
- elimination of interdental diastema (gaps),
- changes and alignment of the shape and length of the crowns,
- masking the traumatic fracture of the incisal edge of the tooth,
- tooth alignment corrections,
- elimination of permanent discoloration resistant to whitening treatments (e.g. caused by the action of tetracycline antibiotics),
- brightening and improving the appearance of teeth that have lost their nice appearance,
- covering unsightly fillings on the visible surfaces of crowns.
Contraindications:
- bad oral hygiene,
- occlusal parafunctions,
- very damaged teeth, with poor-quality enamel,
- gums diseases and periodontitis,
- untreated caries.
How is the treatment going?
Improving the aesthetics of a smile with the use of porcelain veneers is a phased process. Before starting it, all carious lesions should be treated, tartar and sediment removed. As veneers are very thin and to a certain extent transparent, it is also recommended to whiten the teeth in some cases in order to achieve a better cosmetic result.
During the consultation visit, the dentist carries out a dental examination and takes a digital photo of the teeth. After making sure that there are no contraindications and finding out the patient's expectations, the dentist performs a smile analysis and a treatment plan with a cost estimate.
The first visit after approval of the treatment plan and cost estimate is the stage of preparation of the dentition for veneers. Modern dentistry offers veneers that do not require tooth grinding, although they may not be used in every case. Grinding involves removing a small amount of enamel (about 0.5 mm, which is the same as the thickness of a ceramic flake). Grinding is done under anesthesia. Then an impression is taken to make porcelain veneers, and the patient's teeth are secured with temporary veneers made on the basis of the previously taken impression. At this stage, corrections can still be made if the patient has comments on the appearance of the teeth.
The last stage is cementing the finished porcelain veneers. Special light and chemically hardened cements are used for their fixing. The new smile is ready and the patient can fully enjoy it.
Teeth veneers are resistant to dental calculus deposition, so there is no risk of discoloration. Caries does not develop on them, so it can be said that they protect the natural tooth against cavities. They are comfortable and very durable. They provide a beautiful smile for many years, although you should not forget about careful oral hygiene and regular check-up visits to the dentist.
